A Peek Into Our Week

L is for Letter of the Week …

This week the children worked on the identification, formation, and sound of Ss.

C is for Conflict Resolution …

The first phase in Michigan Model came to a close this week with a discussion of how to resolve conflicts. A multi-step approach was introduced: state the problem, identify the best possible outcome, and take appropriate steps to achieve the outcome. Through the use of three books centering on common problems for children – having to wait for a turn, being called a name, and having a parent leave for work – the children were able to explore what happened when different steps were taken to solve the problem. The children were able to see that when the characters in the books tried to get what they wanted by crying, hitting or name calling, the problem actually got worse. The best solutions included talking with an adult, ignoring unkind behavior, and finding something else to do.

M is for Math …

Number formation through 10 has been completed. We continue to work on comparing groups, associating numbers with amounts, patterning, and sorting.

C is for Color Words …

The first color word – purple – was introduced this week. Each color comes with a special song to help the children recognize the word.

H is for Home Practice …

This week please practice the following skills at home with your child. Consistent home practice is essential for skill mastery.

  • Writing first name from memory. The first letter needs to be a capital and the rest lowercase.
  • Counting to 30 or beyond by ones.
  • Identification of numbers 0-10
  • Formation of numbers 0-10
  • Identification, formation, and sound of letters Ll, Tt, Ii, Ff, Ee, and Ss.
  • Identification of the following sight words: a, the, I, see, in you, is, it
  • Identification of the following sight words: purple, Purple

N is for Note from the Teacher …

For show and tell this week your child will need an item beginning with P. Good choices include pumpkins, peanuts, and plastic pigs.

Testing for the end of the marking period will continue next week. I will be focusing on letter identification, letter sounds, and patterning. I was please with how the children did this week on tested areas. Even if a child didn’t meet the benchmark, progress was shown by all! Keep up the good word reviewing at home – it is paying off!

The Halloween party is scheduled for Wednesday, October 31. The morning party will begin at 9:30 with the parade. We need help getting into costumes, so if you are available, please come at 9:10 – we’d love the help! The afternoon party will begin at 12:30 with the all school parade with the party following immediately afterward. Again, we need help with costumes, so if you are able, please come to the classroom at 12:10. I’ve indicated below if your child is to bring a treat for the party.

Keep working on the math bag! Signature sheets are due at the end of the month. Remember that certificates are awarded for completing as few as five activities! Please keep the materials at home – new activities will be sent home for the month of November.
