Webberville New Facilities Dedicated
The Memorial Day Celebration at Webberville Community Schools included a special dedication ceremony. New facilities were dedicated and renovated facilities were rededicated in honor of two former Webberville students.

The dedication ceremony began with the dedication of the Webberville Community High School Regional Agriscience Program, Barn and Greenhouse in honor of William S. Wheeler. Mr. Wheeler was recognized for his countless hours devoted to the promotion of Agriscience in the Webberville Community. Mr. Wheeler has been a teacher, advisor, father, counselor, friend, and servant to many people in the Webberville Community. In addition to his 30 years of teaching Agriscience at Webberville Community High School, he has been a member of the Michigan Association of Agriscience Educators for 43 years, Lions Club, Masons, Methodist Men, Farm Bureau board of Directors, Regional Agriscience and Natural Resources Advisory Committee, Swine Superintendent for Ingham County 4H for 35 years, and served on the 4H Livestock Committee for many years. Mr. Wheeler was recognized for his commitment to service and excellence in all his endeavors. Pictured at left is Mr. Wheeler accepting the plaque in his honor.
Following the Agriscience dedication, the Spartan Center was dedicated to the students and families of Webberville. The Spartan Center was the vision of the Webberville Community School Board and Administration, Webberville Area Healthy Community Initiative, Webberville Community Recreation Association, Webberville Athletic Boosters, Building Excellence Committee and Webberville Community Leaders to provide a center that will promote family wellness, recreational activities, character development, athletic competition, and health education in a safe and caring environment for the children and community members. The Spartan Center is scheduled to open Monday, July 10 th. Housed within the Spartan Center will be the medical offices of Webberville Primary Care and the physical therapy offices of Michigan Rehabilitation Specialists which are due to open Monday, June 19 th.
The events of the day also included the rededication of two facilities; the fitness room and the press box. The Webberville Community Spartan Center Fitness Room was rededicated in the memory of Kirt Lyons. Kirt was valedictorian of his senior class, a member of the National Honor Society, and Academic All-Conference athlete in three sports, and he received an appointment to the United States Military Academy, West Point. As an athlete, Kirt was a two time All-Conference football player receiving All-State honors his senior year. He holds numerous records in football and was awarded All-Conference and All-District player honors in baseball. Kirt served as Vice President of Student Council, Vice President of his senior class, and as President of the National Honor Society. He was also team captain of the football team for two years. Kirt Lyons died unexpectedly in a car accident on January 21, 1989. His parents, Robert and Nancy Lyons, were at the rededication ceremony in honor of their son.
The ceremony concluded with the rededication of the Webberville Community High School Press Box in the memory of Donald “Todd” Johnson. Todd shared his values, hard work, and good examples with all who knew him. Todd was a student/athlete who could always be depended upon to do what was right. As an athlete Todd excelled in football. He was named first team All-League as a lineman and was voted Most Valuable by his football team his senior year. Todd unexpectedly passed away in a boating accident on June 28, 1986. His parents, Don and Linda Johnson, were at the rededication ceremony in honor of their son.
