Year End Reflections of the ’05-’06 School Year
Dr. William C. Skilling, Superintendent
Every school year we strive to improve upon the previous year’s successes and make improvements in areas where we have not been as successful. As I look back on the 2005 -2006 school year we can take pride in the many accomplishments of our students and teachers.
In academics some of our elementary MEAP scores were the highest in the county and overall the MEAP scores went up in the elementary. At the middle school level we saw our MEAP scores go up for the third year in a row in all four curricular areas. Our middle school teachers received one of the highest honors bestowed upon a school, the Michigan Association of School Boards’ Education Excellence Award! The middle school team’s dedication to the high academic and behavioral performance of their students has been outstanding. In addition, middle school teacher
Eileen Slider was awarded the Green Apple Award from MSU. Even though our high school MEAP scores have not been reported yet, we have seen more success in the amount of scholarships our graduating seniors have received this year. We have several seniors who have received full ride scholarships to college that pays for all of their tuition and books. For the fourth year in a row all of our schools made AYP! I want to thank our teachers for the excellent job that they do for our students.
We have seen a lot of success in athletics as well. For the third year in a row the total participation in athletics has increased! Our incidents of unsportsmanlike behavior have been reduced to just three for all three seasons combined. Our goal is to have zero for next year. We are really proud of how our student/athletes have conducted themselves during athletic competition this year. Additional accomplishments have been the girls’ basketball and softball teams receiving academic All-State honors! This is a very high honor. In addition, we have won a district championship in girls’ softball and a conference championship in girls’ track. We have had numerous athletes receive All-Conference, All-District, All-League, All-Region, and All-State honors in both men and women’s athletics.
In addition, we had seven student athletes who received the SMAA Scholar Athlete Award. Thank you to our coaches for the many hours of dedication they put into coaching their respective sports, and for helping our student athletes
develop into the fine young women and men that they are.
We have seen much student success in regards to the fine arts. Our marching band received a “I-superior” rating at the MSBOA marching band festival. Webberville was the only class D school in attendance that earned a first division rating. The Sweet Sixteen choir performed at the state festival and earned a “superior” rating, the highest rating possible. The Women’s Choir and Sweet Sixteen performed at the national competition and earned ratings of “Excellent”. In December 2006 the Webberville vocal music groups Colla Voce and Caritas will be performing in the Candlelight Processional at Disney’s Epcot Center. Congratulations to the band and choir students and teachers for all the success this year!
I want to thank our bus drivers who safely delivered our students to and from school all year and to and from numerous field trips and athletic events. They do an outstanding job! We are also fortunate to have a custodial/maintenance staff that takes such pride in keeping our buildings clean throughout the school year as well. Our administrative assistants and paraprofessionals have also done an outstanding job this year. They are tireless in their devotion to our students and our school. Too often we take them for granted and forget to recognize the valuable service they provide to our school.
Finally, I want to thank the community for all of the volunteer hours they have given to our school to help us achieve excellence for our students. Thank you for your support in making the Spartan Center a reality for our students and community members alike and for your support in the improvement and repair of our facilities. As a school district, we have much to be thankful for this past school year.
Have a great summer vacation and we will see you in
September!
