Year End Celebrations and New Year Opportunities
Dr. William C. Skilling, Superintendent

As we wrap up the calendar year, and look forward to 2006, the school year is only 3 months old and still offers many exciting things in the months ahead.

December is filled with holidays, family and school performances! You and your family will have many opportunities to see and hear the students displaying their talents in a variety of performances. We begin December with the Webberville Theatre production of “Campaign Capers at Taft High . . . or the Winner of Our Discontent.” Following the theatre performances, the 5th – 12th grade bands will be having their Holiday Concerts. Lastly, the Webberville Choirs will be holding two concerts to celebrate the holiday season. The staff and students have been working hard in preparation for these upcoming performances so let’s show our support by filling all the seats!

Another thing that we are looking forward to is the district strategic planning meeting on December 2nd. The strategic planning committee is made up of parents, teachers, administration, staff and community members who are actively involved in setting standards and developing vision driven objectives that are moving our district forward. The end result of the strategic planning meeting is a revised document which is our strategic plan. The strategic plan is posted on our website at www.webbervilleschools.org under the district heading and the strategic plan tab. On the site you are able to view the original plan, along with the bi-annual updates. The administration is very grateful to have such strong support and input from the dedicated individuals who are involved in the strategic planning committee.

The visual changes to our campus will continue to take shape in 2006. The work on the community center is on schedule and the anticipation of the grand opening is beginning to grow. The community is invited to an open house on Saturday, February 25, 2006 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon to celebrate the opening of the community center. From young children to senior citizens, the whole community is going to have the ability to use the facility and be an active part of making this building live up to it’s name…a true “community” center.

In addition to the anticipation of the community center opening, the district will also celebrate the opening of the new barn and greenhouse that will be used by the Regional Agriculture Program. This is an exciting time in the history of our agriculture program as the opportunities increase for our students and the program continues to offer outstanding agri-science educational experiences.

The new year will include continued work on our curriculum as the Curriculum Council recommends changes that will positively impact our student learning and our MEAP scores. The use of technology within the classroom will continue to grow with the use of document cameras, the student response system, video streaming, sound systems, and distance learning. From the changes in the curriculum to the changes in the buildings and grounds, everything is being done with one goal in mind…to ensure that the students of Webberville are being given the tools necessary to not only be successful in school, but to be successful in the world of work and higher education after graduation.

I wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
