Welcome Back to a New School Year - August/September 2006
Dr. William C. Skilling
Bathing suits and shorts start to turn to fall clothes and back to school shopping. School supplies start to take over the aisles where sunscreen and pool toys once were. Instead of looking forward to your summer vacation, you start to plan for homework, athletics, and bus schedules. By the time mid-August arrives you find yourself saying “Where did the summer go?” It’s here before you know it; it’s time to head back to school!
We have many new changes in store for our students this year. We have hired two new elementary teachers, one new middle school teacher and two new high school teachers. In addition we have a new Director of Facilities/Operations and three fitness center supervisors for the Spartan Center. You can learn more about our new staff by turning to pages 4 and 5 of this newsletter. We welcome them to the district and know that they all look forward to working with our students and getting to know the community.
This year the students come back to the grand opening of the Spartan Center. The center gives us the opportunity to continue to expand what we can do for our students. They will have access to the gym facility which includes basketball, volleyball, tennis courts, equipment for golf practice, and brand new locker rooms. On the second level they can use the walking/running track, the wrestling room, and the cheerleading/dance room. In addition, the fitness center is now fully equipped and offers state of the art equipment for our students and the community. Students can take pride in their new surroundings which will also include the Spartan Café and the Spartan Spirit Store.
In addition to the gym and fitness facilities, the Spartan Center also houses the offices of Webberville Primary Care and Michigan Rehabilitation Specialists. These medical professionals offer our students and community access to a doctor, nurse, athletic trainer and physical therapists. You can find information on how to contact them on pages 6 and 7.
Other changes to the facility include the new red brick that is currently being installed on the secondary building along with brand new windows. The brick will help to insulate our building and the new windows will allow more natural light into the classrooms for the benefit of our students and teachers. Both the elementary building and the secondary building have been re-roofed this summer. The custodial staff is busy getting the inside of the building cleaned and ready to go for the first day of school.
Other changes include the relocation of the administration offices and some administration staff. The administration offices, which were housed in the white building in front of the high school, are now located in the Spartan Center. You can find the offices by entering the Spartan Center through the north doors. The white building will be classrooms for our alternative education program. Mr. Harper, Special Education Supervisor, has moved his office to the high school counseling office area. Ms. Griswold, his administrative assistant, is also located in that area. Mr. Mann, Athletic Director, now has his office in the administration area within the Spartan Center. As you can see, there have been several changes which will better service our students and the district.
I will be resuming the once a month “Superintendent’s Coffee” starting in September. These informal meetings will be held at 8:30 a.m. one Friday a month at Angel’s Cafe. My first Superintendent’s Coffee will be Friday, September 8 th. Another opportunity to meet will be at the Superintendent’s Advisory Council Meetings. The first one is scheduled for Monday, September 25 th, at 6:30 p.m. in the Spartan Center Community Room.
Welcome back students and get ready parents! We will kick off the new school year on Tuesday, September 5 th.
