Together We Can Accomplish More - April 2006
Dr. William C. Skilling , Superintendent
Last month we held an open house to give everyone the opportunity to view the progress on the new community center. Progress is going well as we move closer to the grand opening on July 5th, 2006. The community center now has a name, it will be called the Webberville Community Schools Spartan Center . The Spartan Center is a culmination of many community groups and individual ideas aimed at how we could better meet the needs of our students and families in the Webberville Community. The Board of Education received concepts presented by the Webberville Area Healthy Community Initiative, Webberville Community Recreation Association, Webberville Athletic Boosters, the school administration team, local government leaders, and from families looking to have more recreational opportunities. The Spartan Center encapsulates most of the needs that community members and community groups have recommended. The facility is an excellent example of how we can accomplish more when the community comes together collectively to accomplish a goal.
The Spartan Center will promote family values, family wellness, recreational activities, character development, athletic competition, and health education in a safe and caring environment for our children and community members. You will now have the convenience of a doctor's office, Webberville Primary Care, an affiliate of Capitol Internal Medicine Associates P.C., offering family health care. We are currently working towards having a physical therapist, Webberville Therapy Care, to provide rehabilitation treatment for community members and injured athletes. Along with having a physical therapist we are also looking to have an athletic trainer. The athletic trainer would provide student/athletes with rehabilitation when they have injuries and prep them for practices and games when necessary. We are still working to finalize a partnership for the rehabilitation treatment. In addition to offering therapy we are seeking to provide the community classes that would be focused on a wide variety of wellness issues including asthma education, smoking cessation, nutrition, prenatal care, Alzheimer's disease, osteoporosis, sleep disorders, and CPR.
Another example of "Together We Can Accomplish More" is our Regional Agriscience program. The community passed a bond to help build our new Agriscience barn and greenhouse and the FFA Alumni donated labor and the use of equipment to get it built. Secondly, the individual FFA Alumni members have donated tools and their expertise to the program. The Regional Agriscience program is on its way to becoming a national model program according to Randy Showerman, Associate Professor of Agriscience at Michigan State University.
Friday, May 26, 2006 we will be inviting the whole community to our second annual Memorial Day celebration. This school year-ending event will have a picnic lunch for everyone from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Our program at the Greg Glover Track and Field will begin at 1 p.m. and conclude at 2:00 p.m. We will be honoring all veterans, those currently serving and our graduated seniors who have elected to join the military.
The celebration will include a fly-over by four A-10 Warthogs Jets from the Battlecreek Air National Guard Station. We will have a guest speaker in addition to our high school band, choir, and a presentation from the elementary school. If you are a veteran or are currently serving, whether or not you are a resident of Webberville, we want to recognize you at our Memorial Day Celebration. Please contact Barbara Weathers at the Board Office at (517) 521-3422 extension 106 to sign-up. The deadline for signing-up is May 12, 2006.
Finally, as an added bonus to our annual Memorial Day Celebration, we will be dedicating our new Spartan Center and Agriscience facilities. You can tour the facilities from 11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. and again from 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. All of these exciting events could not be possible without the support and encouragement we have had from our community. Thank you for your continued support of Webberville Community Schools because "Together We Can Accomplish More".
