Lansing Lugnuts will honor Webberville students

May 7, 2005 is being set aside to celebrate public education at Oldsmobile Park. The Webberville Education Association is participating in a partnership with the Lansing Lugnuts to promote public education. The student-centered program is called “Public Education Covers All the Bases.”

This year’s program is focusing on the importance of good citizenship and the commitment that public school employees are making to help students become a positive force in their schools and communities.

“We want to recognize students who are shining examples of what good citizenship is all about,” said Kathy Pierman, teacher and Public Relations Coordinator for the WEA. “These students stand out as leaders and role models by displaying responsibility, courtesy, cooperation, respect toward others, and involvement in their community and school. We also want to thank their parents, teachers, and other members of the school community for the important roles they are playing in helping these students develop such outstanding virtues.”

The Webberville Education Association is recognizing the following students for being such exemplary role models of what good citizenship is all about: Caleb Simpson, grade 3; Chelsea Reed, grade 6; Sean Paul Curtis, grade 7; Stephine Sholty, grade 7; Chris Giddings, grade 11; and Amy Maleitzke, grade 12. In addition, junior Stephine Sholty has been chosen as a representative from Webberville Community Schools to participate in the first pitch of the ballgame.

School districts throughout Clinton, Ingham, Eaton, and Shiawassee counties are participating in the good citizenship program, making it the largest public education event ever sponsored by the educational associations in these four counties. An opening ceremony, scheduled to start just prior to 6:00 p.m., will honor over 300 elementary, middle and high school students from across the area.
