An Exciting School Year Ahead of Us - Dr. William C. Skilling
September 2005

The summer is rapidly coming to a close and the new school year is just around the corner. I have heard from many parents and community members about how much they like the new school calendar. After Labor Day students are much more ready for the start of the school year, and parents are so ready to have their student's start the school year!

We have many new changes in store for our students this year. We have hired three (3) new elementary teachers, one (1) new middle school teacher and four (4) new high school teachers. In addition we have a new technology director. All of these new teachers are replacements with the exception of the Alternative Education teacher.

Starting this fall, we will have a new alternative education program for students in grades 7 through 12. This will be a school within a school and will go by the name of " Webberville Secondary Alternative School ." This school is for students who do not perform well in a traditional classroom setting. The new alternative program will allow for more individualized attention and creative strategies to be implemented to assist students in achieving success both academically and socially. Secondly, it benefits the other students in a traditional setting by not slowing the classroom instruction down and by reducing the number of classroom disruptions. We are very excited about the possibilities this new program will offer. If you feel your student would benefit from this type of program, please contact Mr. Friddle.

In addition to the new teachers we have hired, we have also hired several new coaches. We hired four new football coaches, varsity girls' and boys' basketball coaches, and varsity girls' volleyball coaches. All of the new head coaches will be teachers on our staff with the exception of one. We believe with the new coaches we have hired that Webberville will become more competitive in the future as we start to build our programs from the younger grades. We have a commitment to excellence in character, performance, and sportsmanship. We believe we have hired the coaches who will help us achieve these important goals.

If you have driven by the high school, you may have noticed that the new Webberville Community Recreation Center is under construction with a scheduled completion date of June 2006. At the year-end Memorial Day celebration on Friday, May 26, 2006, we hope to dedicate our new facility. I hope you will mark your calendars and plan on attending this event and take part in the dedication of our new community center.

I will be resuming the once a month "Superintendent's Coffee" starting in September. These informal meetings will be held at 8:30 a.m. on the second Friday of the month at Angel's Cafe. This is your chance to meet and discuss anything that may be on your mind in regard to the school district. My first Superintendent's Coffee will be Friday, September 9, 2005 at 8:30 a.m. I hope to see you there.
