Webberville regional agriscience program receives donation

The Regional Agriscience Program offered at Webberville High School was the recipient of a variety of donated items from a local business owner. Barb Byrum, of Byrum Hardware, presented the agriscience program with items that included: hoses, gloves, starting trays, first aid kit, screwdrivers, hammers, sprayer, tape measure, nozzles, pruners and other garden tools. Byrum Hardware, which has hardware stores located in Stockbridge, Leslie, and Charlotte, is a supporter of the agriculture program offered through Webberville Schools.

The agriculture and natural resources program is a partnership between Michigan State University , The Capital Area Career Center at Ingham Intermediate School District , Webberville Community Schools , and the Webberville FFA Alumni. The program is open to all students in Ingham County regardless of their resident school district.

Students have the opportunity to learn and gain hands-on experience in the most popular fields of agriscience and natural resources including horticulture and animal care (handling and nutrition). Students work cooperatively on class projects, interact and work with industry professionals, and participate in FFA competitions. These activities provide a wide variety of agriscience learning experiences, leadership training, and personal growth and development, vital in creating a successful student learning environment.

Loretta Benjamin , Webberville secondary teacher, is in charge of the program. Benjamin was recently recognized by the secondary school staff for her work on the agriculture and natural resources curriculum that she created with the Capitol Area Career Center . The program continues to expand as the students anticipate the opening of the newly constructed greenhouse at the high school. The greenhouse is scheduled to open by the end of November.
