New Weight Training Facility in Webberville The students of Webberville were welcomed back from spring break with the unveiling of their new weight training facility in the secondary building.
Prior to the current facility, weight training was done in a portable classroom outside of the high school. The equipment was old, and the facility was not a place that encouraged the students to workout. Adhering to the commitment to strive for excellence in all areas of the school program meant that the weight training facility had to be addressed and an effort had to be made to supply the best equipment for the students.
The first obstacle was bringing the training facility back into the high school building instead of having it in the portable. The secondary building is currently being remodeled to accommodate new classrooms, computer labs, and a new media center. The remodeling allowed for a weight training room to be added. The transformation began with new paint, new mirrors, a prominent Spartan logo painted on the wall and a new floor, custom made to handle the wear and tear of weight training. To complete the training facility, brand new Hammer Strength weight training equipment was ordered. The equipment is the same type that you would find at a university or professional level training facility, for example, the University of Michigan, Michigan State University and the Detroit Lions all use Hammer Strength equipment. Jerome Learman, JV track coach and football coach noted, “The quality of the weight room makes it the premier, or one of the premier, small school weight rooms in the state. The new equipment gives our students’ an excellent opportunity to prepare themselves to win. Students will be able to make their bodies more injury resistant and to improve the performance capabilities of their bodies. High quality equipment and an excellent environment give the weight room a collegic feel to it.”
The remodeling of the weight training facility has had a positive affect on the students; they can be seen working out daily, before and after school. Jordan Williams, a senior, noted, “This is a big improvement over what we had before and lots of people are using it now. It is nice to know that we have one of the best weight rooms around.”
The new weight training room is the second step in revamping the athletic facilities within the district. The first improvement was completed in April when the district dedicated their new track and field facility. On June 14 th voters in the school district will vote on an 8.5 million dollar bond proposal that will fund the next phase of improvements. The bond proposal will not raise taxes and will provide the students and community with a top of the line athletic/community center. The center will house basketball/volleyball courts, a jog/run track, a fitness center, a wrestling/aerobics room, a training room, a community meeting room, athlete and family locker rooms, a school based health clinic, an indoor tennis court, a guidance/counseling area, a spirit store, and offer adult recreation and fitness opportunities.
