Webberville’s new track officially named “The Greg Glover Track & Field”
Published - April 2004
The realization of a dream came true on April 20 th, 2004 for Greg Glover. Mr. Glover has been the head track coach for the Webberville Community Schools for 26 years and he has successfully taken his teams to district and state competitions. The thing that makes his success unique is that he achieved great things with his teams despite the fact that Webberville never had a track and field facility. The Webberville track team would work out in the field behind the high school or on Main Street in front of the elementary school. All that changed on Tuesday, April 20 th as the community came together to dedicate the new track and field facility and to witness the first home track meet in the school’s history. While Mr. Glover was seeing his dream become a reality, what he didn’t know was that the facility was being dedicated to him and would officially become “The Greg Glover Track and Field”.
Greg has been with the Webberville Community Schools for over 26 years in the position of elementary physical education teacher, coach, athletic director and most recently in the role of Assistant Principal/Director of Athletics.
Mr. Glover arrived at the track dedication anxious to begin the ceremonies and then focus his attention on the track meet that followed. Following comments from Cliff Simmons, Board President, Dr. William C. Skilling, Superintendent and Greg himself the Webberville Board of Education held a special meeting at the dedication site to pass a resolution honoring Greg and to officially name the facility. Surrounded by his parents, family, friends, former students, track alumni and community members Mr. Glover stood in amazement as the dedication plaque was unveiled to reveal the name of the facility. “It was very humbling,” Greg commented, “never in my wildest dreams would I have thought this would happen.” It speaks volumes about the way that the community feels about Greg by the fact that they were able to keep the dedication a secret in order to honor him. Those in the crowd continually voiced their respect and admiration for Mr. Glover and that he most definitely deserved the honor that was being bestowed upon him.
Following the unveiling of the dedication plaque, Greg was honored by Troy Perkins, track alumni, who spoke of Greg’s enthusiasm and compassion for the students of Webberville. Mr. John Leonard, Village President, presented Greg with a resolution honoring him and officially naming April 20 th, 2004 as “Greg Glover Day”. Lastly an aide from Representative Diane Byrum’s office presented Greg with a resolution from the Representative and the Governor acknowledging his accomplishments and commitment to the school district.
To complete the track dedication, the track alumni present were invited to participate in a ceremonial first lap around the track which coincided with a balloon launch. At the conclusion of the ceremonies, Greg was able to focus his attention on his team and get the first home track meet at the “Greg Glover Track and Field” underway. When asked to summarize his thoughts Greg commented “This is a great honor. The fact that the community thought that much of me to do something like this, I am honored.”
