New Leadership at Webberville Elementary School
Webberville Elementary School will start the 2004-2005 school year under new leadership. On May 10 th, the Board of Education voted unanimously to hire Mrs. Suzi Slater as the new elementary principal.
Slater brings to her new position 30 years of experience as an elementary teacher with Webberville Community Schools. She started with the district in 1974 as a first grade teacher and has continued to successfully teach 1 st, 3 rd, and 5 th grades, as well as a 5 th/6 th split classroom. During her time as a teacher, Slater also stepped in as the substitute administrator and has dealt with student discipline, staff concerns, and parental issues.
Slater is enthusiastic about her new role within the elementary school, “I am very excited and honored to be chosen as the leader of the elementary building. It is an exciting time for the district and I am very enthusiastic about having the responsibility of helping make the changes that are coming.”
You just need to talk with Slater for a short time to feel her excitement about the elementary building and the staff that she will be leading. “The staff has been very positive and supportive. We have worked together for a long time and they are a strong, hardworking, and dedicated group of people. To be the leader of a group of people like this is an honor.”
Slater was asked what her primary objectives will be for the K-6 building. “My primary goal will be to make the staff, students, and parents feel supported. I want them to feel enthusiastic about the school and the programs being offered. My goal is to keep everyone in the school community well informed about the changes that are happening, to create a positive atmosphere, and to be a visible presence in the building,” she responded. With her 30 years of teaching experience, Slater will be a valuable resource to new teachers in the district as they begin their teaching careers and a well respected leader to the existing staff.
Slater, and her husband, Steve, have been married for 25 years and are the proud parents of two sons. Her boys, Matt, in 8 th grade, and Andy, in 9 th grade, both attend Waverly schools and are active in the fine arts and sports. Slater earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Child Development and Teaching at Michigan State University in 1974.
