Changing for the Future - June/July 2004 Dr. William C. Skilling, Superintendent
Change is a good thing, until it happens to you! Every person approaches change in a different way and it affects all people differently. When you are faced with change as a community, you will get those that embrace it and those that “remember how it used to be” and long for those days to return.
As a school district, we are aware of our need to recognize our past accomplishments, but not let our past predetermine our future. In January the Board of Education adopted the new slogan “Proud of Our Past, Promoting Our Future” which means that we are proud of what our schools have done in the past, but we are going to purposely drive toward the future with the goal of becoming a premier school system that will set the new standard of excellence. It is easy to say the words that you want to be a premier school, but the force that is going to drive this vision is change.
Faced with an enrollment that has steadily declined for the past 10+ years, we know that we can’t continue with “business as usual” if we want to be a premier school district. Recently we conducted a strategic planning meeting that brought together members of the community, staff, and administration in order to work together to create the plan that would move us forward. We developed several goals and strategies, along with indicators of success, that would hold us accountable for the progress that we wanted for our district. In the months since the strategic planning meeting, we have had the challenge of putting into action the necessary steps and changes that are going to help us meet our goals.
One of the things that we are very excited about is the upcoming bond vote on June 14 th. We are asking voters to allow us to construct an athletic/community center which would be for both school and community use. The center would allow us to offer expanded services such as additional practice facilities, a fitness center, a 3 lane-track, a spirit store, a student services area and an area for a school based health center. In addition to the community center, we will install bleachers in the track and field facility, construct a new agriculture building for our regional agriscience program and update our parking areas. The total cost of the bond project is 8.5 million dollars and it will not raise taxes for the community. The second proposal that will be on the ballot will be a sinking fund. The money generated from this fund would be used strictly for upkeep and maintenance of our school facilities. The sinking fund would mean a 1 mill increase or less than $1.00 a week for an average home of $100,000.
We have decided to move toward the future with a purpose and vision driven goals. We have chosen to welcome change in order to improve. We know that the end result will mean better facilities, increased opportunities, and a premier educational experience for the students of our district.
