Blessings of a School District - December 2004

Dr. William C. Skilling, Superintendent

Christmas is a time for many families to come together and celebrate the birth of the Christ child, to celebrate family traditions, and to reflect on the many blessings they have enjoyed as families during the course of the year. For me as Superintendent of Webberville Community Schools, it is also a time for me to reflect on the blessings that our school family has experienced this past year.

As a parent I am thankful for the opportunities that my family has enjoyed this year in Webberville. It has been a joy to see five of my children transition so well into our school system. They are truly happy to be here. The teachers, students, and administration have made them feel so welcomed. They are involved in athletics, choir, band, the musical, student council, theatre, National Honor Society, 4-H, and community service projects. They have been given so many opportunities here. My wife and I feel truly blessed to be here.

I feel blessed as a superintendent to have the quality teaching staff that we have in Webberville. I am grateful for their dedication and commitment to our students each and every day. Given our financial difficulties they have been asked to do more with less and have risen to the challenge! This year we have many teachers teaching additional classes, teaching larger class sizes, and some are teaching in a split grade. We have other teachers who are teaching at two or three different grade levels so our students can have more elective opportunities. In addition, we have teachers volunteering to support Saturday school. We have coaches volunteering their time to support training table before and after school to assist students who are in need of extra help in their classes. We have dedicated middle school teachers who are working after school with our middle school students who struggle to help them to achieve their personal best. I enjoy walking through our buildings to see, hear, and feel the positive climate our teachers have established for our students.

I also am grateful for the quality support staff we have. The paraprofessionals, teaching assistants, custodians, secretaries, bus drivers, and kitchen staff make a difference for our students every day. Everyone is contributing to the excellence we are striving for at Webberville Community Schools.

Our new administration staff has also made a significant impact on our students and staff this year. It is a blessing to hear from students, staff, parents, and community members what a great job they are doing. We are so fortunate that Mrs. Slater was willing to take the helm of the elementary school, Mr. Friddle was willing to come to Webberville to be the secondary principal, Mr. Harper was willing to be our Special Education Coordinator, and that Mr. Glover is providing the leadership for our athletic programs and the secondary school as assistant principal. They have all made a significant contribution in a very short period of time.

I want to express my gratitude for the parents and community members of Webberville. Our parents and community members have been very supportive of their school. We have enjoyed many parents and senior citizen volunteers in our schools. We have received over $30,000 dollars in donations this past year. The community approved a bond issue and sinking fund last June. We had 17 instruments donated to the band program this year. The Webberville Lions Club and Williamston Rotary Club have given generously to the school district and to scholarships for our students. Local merchants sponsored a golf outing to raise money for scholarships. There are so many people, businesses, and organizations that have supported us this past year it is just overwhelming to think about. I just want to say thank you because without your support, we would not have the fine school system we do today.

May you all have a blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year.
