Job Description: Building Principal

Primary Function:

 

To use leadership, supervisory, and administrative skills to implement educational programs that promote achievement for every student in the building; to maintain positive community relations.

 

Qualifications:

 

Education:
MA in educational leadership, curriculum, supervision, or related fields from an accredited university

 

Training and Experience:
Five (5) years of successful teaching experience minimum
Knowledge of theory, research methods, and best practices in education

 

Demonstrated Technical Skills:
Planning and organizational skills, knowledge of age appropriate curriculum, application of appropriate assessment, knowledge and effective use of age appropriate, research based instructional strategies. Computer literacy skills

 

Human Relations Skills:
Ability to communicate effectively and relate positively with students, parents, staff, and other members of the community.

Assigned Responsibilities:

 

Supervision of Personnel

1. Assume responsibility for all organization, administration, and supervision within the building of professional staff, para-educator, administrative and support personnel.

2. Submit recommendations to the Superintendent for the appointment, assignment, promotion, or dismissal of all personnel assigned to their supervision.

3. Work with the administrative team on the assignment of the teaching staffs within their buildings.

4. Conducts meeting of the staff as necessary for the proper functioning of the school

5. Monitor and evaluate the instructional program focusing on the supervision of the teaching process.

6. Supervise the guidance program to enhance individual student education and development.

7. Supervise the maintenance of accurate records on the progress and attendance of students.

 

Supervision of Students

8. Oversee attendance, conduct, discipline, and health of students and communicates with parents on these issues.

9. Maintain high standards of student conduct and enforce discipline based on Board Policy, according to due process rights of students

10. Make arrangements for special conferences between parents and teachers when necessary

11. Recommend the promotion or retention of students within his/her building based on the recommendations of staff

12. Coordinate with the special education staff to recommend appropriate services for potential and current special education students

 

Communication and Public Relations

13. Communicate completely and continuously with the superintendent as to the condition of the schools and their activities.

14. Maintain positive public relations with the community and utilize community resources to enrich the educational program.

15. With staff and parents, develop and communicate a vision of quality education for all students

16. Maintain active relationships with students and parents

17. Establish and update written guides for proper student conduct and maintaining student discipline

 

Management of Resources

18. Requisition instructional supplies and equipment as well as all other necessary materials to operate the school

19. Assist in the management and preparation of the school budget

20. Maintain and control the various local funds generated by student activities

Instructional Program

21. Lead the development, determination of appropriateness, and monitoring of instructional programs that fit with the needs and interests of the students

22. Assist in the development, revision, and evaluation of the curriculum

23. Budget school time to provide for the efficient conduct of school instruction and business

24. Schedule classes within established guidelines to meet student needs

25. Assist in the development, revision, and evaluation of the curriculum

26. Supervise the ancillary staff program to enhance individual student education and development

 

Miscellaneous

27. Oversee the following:

A. All school activities
B. Faculty meetings
C. Parent-Teacher and/or Booster organizations
D. Lunch time activities
E. Fire drills
F. Emergency drills - Crisis Plan
G. School exhibits

28. Assume responsibility for his or her own professional growth and keeps abreast of changes and developments in the profession through attendance of conferences at the local, state and national level, reading of professional journals, and meeting with colleagues

29. Perform all such other duties as may be assigned to them by the superintendent or his/her designee.

 

Terms of Employment:

Per administrative contract with the Superintendent and Board of Education

 

Evaluation:

Annually on or before March 1st of each fiscal year
